Mathematics MA Program

Master of Arts in Mathematics

Our program is designed for students who are interested in pursuing a rigorous graduate program in mathematics with the added benefit of gaining hands-on training and experience with teaching. It can:

  • qualify students for advanced teacher licensure in high school mathematics (Secondary Teaching Concentration)
  • prepare students for community college teaching positions (College Teaching Concentration), or
  • serve as excellent preparation for doctoral programs in mathematics or mathematics education.

Students complete the program with solid foundations in mathematics as well as knowledge of pedagogical issues such as collaborative learning, effective classroom teaching, assessment strategies, and the use of technology in the classroom. Most of our students are full-time, on-campus students who participate in 10-13 hours of classes each semester and gain teaching experience through a paid graduate teaching assistantship. We also offer an online program in which students participate in 1-2 classes a semester via video conferencing (typically using zoom).

Thinking about applying? See our FAQ page and our Guide for Students for more information.

Cannot be in Boone to take courses? We also enroll part-time, distance education students who participate in 3-6 hours of classes each semester through video-conferencing.  [more info]

Dual Degree Master's Program: Mathematics and  Engineering Physics.

Students who are interested in both physics and mathematics may choose to pursue a dual degree program, in which students complete 54 hours of mathematics and physics courses leading to both the MA in Mathematics and the MS in Engineering Physics. [Program of Study]

Acccelerated Master's Program for Current Undergraduate Majors
